John Deere introduces Connected Support, an intelligent database that aims to prevent mechanical failure.

John Deere Connected Support functions as a database that gathers extremely detailed information about mechanical failures, in order to predict and thus prevent these failures in the future.

Let’s say there are a few known cases where the hydraulic pump on a John Deere 6R series tractor fails. The tractors have been repaired by the dealers. These John Deere dealers now have the opportunity to perform a extensive diagnosis after the repair.

Indication of a breakdown

If it turns out that several dozens (or even hundreds) of hours before the hydraulic pump broke down the slightest deviation or vibration has been detected by the tractor’s computer system in for instance a pressure hose or pressure valve, than that may have been an indication that the hydraulic pump was wearing down faster than expected or was about to fail.

These data are collected by John Deere engineers. When they come to the conclusion that the devations or vibrations that have been detected have predictive value, then this phenonemon is being uploaded in a self-learning database. As a consequence, the database now knows that the hydraulic pump is about to fail when certain deviations or vibrations in a pressure hose or valve occur. Using that information, the dealer can prevent these failures.

Other examples are deviations in pressure, temperature, vibrations or voltage differences in bearings, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems and so on. The more failures – and their causes – are uploaded in the database, the more likely it is that the John Deere dealer can warn his customers in order to prevent breakdowns when the computer recognizes a certain pattern.

John Deere offers its Connected Support system together with extended warranty in the case a new machine is purchased. Obviously, the buyer needs to be in possession of other digital telemetry systems by John Deere, such as JD-Link. So it’s not exactly clear what Connected Support costs. Forementioned packages have price tags that start at around 500-600 dollars.
