Manure and slurry application equipment specialist Samson Agro is taking a lead from sprayer manufacturers by developing auto levelling and height control for slurry dribble booms.

2 ultrasonic sensors mounted one on each side detect the height of the boom relative to the ground and send these data to software in Samson’s SlurryMaster 8000 in-cab control terminal. This unit signals hydraulic cylinders to adjust the position of the boom if necessary.

At present, the system is available on Samson’s SHB4 36 dribble boom for drag hose slurry application.

Independent sensing and adjustment control

Independent sensing and adjustment control of the 2 18m sections means the boom can be altered to match sloping ground on one side or when the tractor runs along a slight dip or rise in the ground.

Minimising losses of valuable nitrogen

Maintaining the correct height means slurry continues to be dribbled gently to the soil surface from the drop hoses, minimising losses of valuable nitrogen through evaporation of ammonia, and also ‘contamination’ of existing grass or arable crops.

It also prevents damage in extreme situations caused by the boom end striking the ground, Samson Agro points out, as well as easing the workload and tiring stress experienced by operators having to make adjustments manually in fields that are not level throughout.

The required working height is set using the SlurryMaster 8000 touch screen and control joystick.

4 slurry distributors

Samson’s SHB4 Series boom has 4 slurry distributors to handle a large volume of liquid applied across the 36m working width. There are different configurations that fold to also work at 20m, 24m and 30m; 24m and 30m; 24m; and 20m as well as at full width.

SlurryMaster 8000 controller

The SlurryMaster 8000 controller has a 10-inch high-resolution touch screen and standard personal computer-type processor. Purpose designed for slurry tanker operation, it automatically runs through a set-up options procedure when connected to a particular spreader for the first time. These are then stored for subsequent use and settings for up to 10 different machines can be memorised.

Samson’s switch and joystick control pad is coated with silicone for improved grip when moving over an uneven surface, buttons are backlit and are said to provide a distinctive ‘click’ when used, and a ‘query’ button shows which functions are available to the joystick, depending upon the particular spreader being operated.
