Agrobot robots are harvesting strawberries in California on a large scale.

Spanish company Agrobot, manufacturer of agricultural robots, has made its way to the United States, where its robots are harvesting strawberries in California.

Artificial intelligence

The Agrobot SW 6010 strawberry harvesting robot uses artifical intelligence to recognise strawberries that are ripe for picking. The machine is equipped with 30 robotic arms, on which cameras are mounted. The cameras are able to capture between 10 and 30 images per second and can analyse whether the strawberries meet the right requirements in order to be picked, taking into account parameters such as size and colour.

The robot then proceeds to cut the stem and place the strawberry onto a conveyer, all in a mather of 4 seconds. After that, the strawberries are sorted and collected in boxes by workers. The Agrobot SW 6010 is able to harvest up to 100 hectares in 3 days.

Agrobot SW 6010 relatively cheap

According to the company, the construction of the robot is simple and sturdy, which makes the machine relatively cheap. For instance, since the arms work independently of one another, the machine can still function in the case 1 or more arms break down. Also, the various components are easy to replace, says Agrobot.
