Description

Sparter has a patented underground detection system that can deliver better quality asparagus. The asparagus is harvested before emerging from the soil,  avoiding violet discoloration and reducing the number of open heads. The harvester restores the sand bed after picking, reducing the percentage of bent spears. With subsurface detection, the harvesting frequency can be reduced to once every three days, tripling the harvesting capacity compared to a system with detection after surfacing. The robot can work day and night, as required. It has a small turning circle and caterpillar tracks for reducing soil compaction and extra stability.

Drive train type

53.7 kW diesel motor driving hydraulic pumps and an electrical generator. Electrical power is buffered by batteries and fed to the robot via inverters.

Characteristics

Vertical force up to 1000 N. Working area height x length x width = 0.7m x 2.1m x 0.7 m. Cycle time 1.1 sec for cutting, picking, and offloading per asparagus.

Navigation system

The Sparter can work both day and night due to the subsurface detection. For asparagus handling, the machine has working lights.

Name/ type robotSparter
DimensionsDimensions Length : 9.7m/31.8ft. Width : 2.55m/8.4ft. Height: 2.99m/9.8ft. Track width 1.65m/5.4ft
Turning radius2.5m/8.2ft
Weight  10,500 kg
Energy source  Diesel/electric
Energy stock/range  8–10 litres diesel per hour in harvesting modes. Tank is 110 litres, suitable for a 16 to 18 hours working day.
Driveline  53.7 kW diesel motor driving hydraulic pumps and an electrical generator. Electrical power is buffered by batteries and fed to the robot via inverters.
Output capacity  Typical 0.3 ha per hour. Because of subsurface detection, the next harvesting cycle can wait 3 days which makes the machine suitable for 15 ha in 2 shifts. For 24/7 harvesting it would be max 20 ha. This number is influenced by the row length, row pitch, asparagus variety and number of asparagus per ha.
If the Sparter is used both in the mini tunnel season and in the black/white season, the number of ha increases to 25 with 2 shifts.
Navigation systemA combination of GPS, LiDAR, cameras and the latest technology
