Tractor warns approaching traffic using IoT and 5G

The fast developing Internet of Things (IoT) and the 5G network offer numerous possibilities to enhance road safety when it comes to agrcultural vehicles. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) for instance developed a connection between tractors and surrounding traffic, using a internet connection.

John Deere and BMW

The tractor sends out a signal to approaching traffic, and warns it of its presence. The signal is sent in a 1 kilometre radius. Other road users receive the message through the display of their car or through their smartphone. ETSI developed the connection using the protocols from the IoT platform Sensinov and the Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation (AEF). The system was demonstrated on a John Deere and a approaching BMW.

Last year Claas already won an award at the Agrotechnica with a similar system, called Large Vehicle Alert System.
