Kula Bio raises $ 10M to market nitrogen biofertiliser

Biofertiliser Kula-N to help farmers maintain yield and significantly reduce environmental impact from traditional, synthetic nitrogen fertilisers.

Kula Bio is a developer of sustainable nitrogen solutions. The company today announced it has closed a $ 10 million seed round. The round was led by Collaborative Fund with participation from environmental funds, including The Nature Conservancy, Lowercarbon Capital, and the Grantham Environmental Trust’s Neglected Climate Opportunities Fund.

Beneficial bacteria

Kula Bio makes Kula-N, a ‘next generation’ nitrogen biofertiliser that is to help farmers maintain yield and significantly reduce environmental impact from traditional, synthetic nitrogen fertilisers. Kula Bio uses beneficial bacteria that have been removing nitrogen from the air and placing it into the soil. The bacteria are energised without genetic modifications to create Kula-N. The density of the bacteria is then increased and the bacteria are fortified with a carbon rich energy source, in order for the bacteria to build up larger than normal stores of energy and nutrients.

According to Kula Bio, Kula-N can be applied via irrigation and works for all crops.

Field trials

Since its founding in 2018, the company has run a series of third-party replicated field trials across diverse geographies, soil types and crops. According to Kula Bio, their product can replace up to 80% of a farm’s nitrogen use.
