The German company Bayer Crop Science took the opportunity at the Agritechnica trade fair to showcase a prototype of its spot sprayer. The MagicSprayer 6000 has a working width of 6 meters, divided over three elements.

Bayer Crop Science’s MagicSprayer 6000, in principle, is similar to the well-known EcoRobotix ARA, which also has a 6-meter working width. However, the spray nozzles on the MagicSprayer are placed even closer together: at a distance of 3 instead of 4 centimeters. This distance results in ‘pixels’ of 4 by 4 centimeters on the ground for spot-specific weed control.

LED lighting and cameras

According to Bayer, the LED lighting on the underside provides more light than comparable machines, ensuring the conditions are always identical. Between the LED lights at the front and back, seen in the direction of travel, there is a camera for weed detection, two additional light sources, and two cameras/sensors for the precise location of the weeds. This is followed by a row of spray nozzles.

Spot sprayer is a prototype

So far, it has been tested at maximum speeds of 6 km/h. According to Bayer, speeds of 8 to 12 km/h should ultimately be possible. The machine is still a prototype. Next year, it will undergo further testing and development.

Bayer does not plan to market the MagicSprayer 6000 itself. The manufacturer considers the technology as one of the systems to reduce herbicide use.
